Nutrition

Dr. Allen is one of 170 doctors of chiropractic in the U.S. board certified in nutrition by the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (DCBCN). He prescribes nutritional supplements - to include dietary and lifestyle recommendations - for those patients who have symptoms of deficiency including those individuals who just don't feel well.

It is Dr. Allen's clinical philosophy, after many years practicing nutritional counseling, that many patients are taking too many supplements. Though Dr. Allen recommends supplements for his patients, he does this on an individual, condition-specific basis. In most offices, and particularly in retail health food outlets, patients are told to take "this supplement for that symptom" the way drugs are prescribed imitating the traditional medical model. What happens with this kind of nutritional approach is a formula, "one-size-fits-all" approach to the art of nutritional counseling. One size does not fit all. It is wasteful, expensive, and ultimately leaves the patient feeling more frustrated than they began - taking lots of pills they never really needed in the first place.

Have you ever asked yourself any of these questions?

  1. I went to three different practitioners who came up with three completely different diagnoses and made three completely different recommendations. How do I know what is accurate for my body?
  2. I went to one practitioner who made certain recommendations. My friend went to him a month later and he made the exact same recommendations for her. How can it be that we both require exactly the same thing??
  3. How do I know if these supplements are working?
  4. What diet is best for me? I've read about high protein diets, low protein diets, juice fasts, and elimination diets.
  5. Are my symptoms simply due to the fact that I'm 'getting old'?
  6. What can I do for problems that are just beginning?
  7. My doctor said there's 'nothing wrong with me' but I still feel bad. What should I do?

Not only is scientifically based nutrition the most important tool you can have for the prevention of disease, but it can also optimize the health of your body to promote healing and repair. Many problems can be identified long before you actually have symptoms. Certain laboratory tests, when properly read, may indicate progression toward a serious illness. A properly trained nutritional doctor can identify problem areas and carefully document major and minor conditions that may lead to problems later on.
